Mr. William J. Moore was a legendary educator. He came to teach in West Cape in 1895, planning to work out some of the new ideas about progressive teaching he had learned at Howard University.
During the next half-century, when the elementary school of West Cape May was segregated by law, he offered Black students a superior, culturally relevant education. After his death in 1973, his students formed the William J. Moore Scholarship Foundation to honor his work.
The William J. Moore Scholarship Foundation was recently highlighted on CBS Philadelphia's Black History Month celebration series. Mrs. Lynda Towns and Chief Dekon Fashaw Sr., who are Foundation board members and scholarship recipients, were interviewed. To view full interview, click here.
